Tips For Maintaining Your Water Softening Equipment

Posted on

If you are lucky enough to have a water softening system for your home, you will want to make sure that you are doing everything you can to keep it in good shape so it will last a long time. There are some maintenance things that you will need to do in order to continue enjoying the soft water throughout your home. Some of those things include:

Add Additional Salt When Needed

It is important to keep your water softening equipment filled with the proper amount of salt. Without enough salt, the system will not be able to get your hard water soft. You should be able to easily access the compartment that holds the salt and there should be a line that will show you how much salt needs to be in the system.

Clean The Brine Tank

The brine tank is where the salt goes. This tank should be cleaned once or twice a year in order to prevent a massive buildup of sludge or salt that stuck together and became a large mass. A quick wash with warm water is all that is needed to get the old salt or sludge out of the tank. Once it is clean, you can put it back in the water softening equipment and fill it back up with the water and fresh salt that it needs. Do make sure that you are only using high-quality salt that was approved for this type of use.

Replace The Prefilter As Needed

The prefilter is what your hard water will go through before it reaches the softening area. This filter will remove the majority of the hard minerals, clay, and whatever else might be in your water. This allows you to end up with the cleanest possible water to be softened. So, not only will your water be much more gentle on your clothes and skin, but it is going to taste a lot better as well. Make sure that you are replacing this filter about twice a year or as needed.

If you need additional assistance with the maintenance of your water softening equipment, you will want to get in touch with a contractor as soon as possible. They will be able to not only help maintain the equipment for you, but they can give the entire system a quick inspection so they can see if there are any problems starting to develop. This will allow you to get everything repaired before the system completely stops working.
