Why Is Your Dishwasher Full Of Water And What Can You Do?

Posted on

If you run your dishwasher only to find that your dishes are still dirty and there is water sitting in the bottom of the basin, it could mean you have a bit of an issue on your hands. You can hire a professional appliance repair company to come out and take a closer look at your appliance for you, or you may be able to tackle this on your own with some troubleshooting. Read on for some tips to help you clear the water from your dishwasher and how to prevent it from happening again.

Remove The Standing Water

You need to get to the bottom of the dishwasher, so you have to remove the water from inside. You can use cups and bowls to get rid of the water, or you can try to pour some drain cleaning solution into the dishwasher to see if this clears it up. Either way you do it, you have to get rid of the water in order to move on.

Remove The Spinner Arms And The Filter

Once the water is removed, you need to remove the spinner arms and the filter beneath it. If the filter is clogged with anything, you need to remove the debris from inside and clean it thoroughly. This is the first filter in the drain, and there should be more than one and possibly even a catch basin as well. Clean this all out to ensure there aren't any clogs inside the dishwasher. This can occur if you are not scraping your dishes or rinsing enough of the food away from your dishes, and it can eventually accumulate in your drain, which can cause the clog to occur. Be sure to clean off your dishes before putting them into your dishwasher. This can sometimes happen even if your dishwasher has a disposal inside, so keep an eye out for this as well.

Clear The Rest Of The Drain

If the clog was not in the dishwasher itself, it doesn't mean that the drain is not still clogged. You should clear out the drain by using a drain cleaner, or you can use a plumbing snake in the drain. Once finished, try to pour a bucket of water into the drain to see if this helps or if you have water still accumulating in the dishwasher basin. If you do not, you can test your dishwasher again to see if it fills with water again. If it still fills with water, you may want to call an appliance repair technician for help.

If your dishwasher is filling up with water, it may be a nuisance for you, especially since you will then have to do your dishes by hand. Call an appliance repair service for more information.
